SHSAT PREP FOR NYC 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS

Win back the points
you keep losing.

Lofty Grove SHSAT finds the ELA and math skills costing you points, teaches the method, and drills it until it sticks. Every right answer grows your own island.

Step 1

Find what is
costing you points.

A short diagnostic, then every answer you give, shows which skills are holding your score back, measured against the score you want.

Step 2

Learn the method
in a few minutes.

Short lessons show each method, an example, and the trap to avoid. No calculator and no formula sheet on the SHSAT, so every method works by hand.

  1. The method

    Percent change = change ÷ original × 100. For a p% increase, multiply by (1 + p/100). Simple interest = principal × rate × time.

  2. See it in action

    A $40 shirt is 25% off: 40 × 0.75 = $30.

  3. Check your work

Percent change uses the original value. Two changes in a row do not add: up 10% then down 10% is not the starting value.

Step 3

Drill it
until it sticks.

Your plan sends you to the skill with the most points open. Missed questions come back until you get them right on your own.

+3 growth on your island for each one you get right

YOUR ISLAND

One answer. One bloom.

Each correct answer adds growth, and flowers spread to open ground. Colors cross into new ones: red and yellow make orange, pink and orange make purple. Blue is rare, and there may be a golden one.

YOUR ISLAND

Every skill grows its own plant.

Three correct answers in a skill plant its own tree or bush: bamboo for equations, pine for geometry, maple for reading comprehension. Your island shows what you have worked on.

YOUR ISLAND

Seasons and visitors.

Your island follows your calendar: blossoms in spring, snow in winter. Study two days in a row and a visitor waits with a gift; a long study day brings meteors.

Ratios and ratesOriginal practice example

A tank loses water at a constant rate. After 12 minutes, it holds 180 liters. After 20 minutes, it holds 132 liters.

How many liters of water were in the tank when it began to drain?

What is the island?

Your island is a picture of your study. Growth follows learning. A new correct answer adds 3 on your own, 1 with hints. Fixing a question you missed adds 2, and later spaced retries add more. A skill that holds on a second and third study day adds 4 each time. Lessons, full-length tests, and finished study days add a little more.

Does the island change my score or my plan?

No. The island is for motivation only. Your study plan, review, and progress come from your answers. Score estimates come only from full-length practice tests, and they are never official scores.

What is the SHSAT?

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test. NYC 8th and 9th graders take it to apply to eight specialized high schools, such as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. It has an ELA section and a math section, and you cannot use a calculator.

What can I use for free?

Everything in the app is free during the launch: all lessons and practice in the current library, full-length practice tests with score estimates, the diagnostic, your study plan, hints, explanations, mistake review, progress tracking, and your island. There is nothing to buy, and no payment card is asked for.

Who creates the account?

A parent or guardian creates the account with their own email and agrees to the privacy policy. Then the student signs in on any device, and the plan, history, and island follow them. You can try a question on this page first without an account.

Who can see my island?

Only you. Your island, your name, and your answers are never shown to other students.

Can I study on my phone?

Yes. Lessons, practice, review, your study plan, and your island work on phone screens.
